Microbiome in GI-diseases
Research goal
The microbiome impinges on numerous physiological and pathophysiological processes such as regulation of metabolism, digestion, cardiovascular system, the immune system, and possibly numerous diseases. Recent evidence suggests that patients with pancreatic diseases such as acute or chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer harbour a distinct oro-intestinal and pancreas-specific microbiome that might have profound implications on the course and prognosis of the disease. Therefore, we investigate alterations of the microbiome in inflammatory and malignant diseases of the pancreas to identify novel diagnostic, prognostic and potentially therapeutic tools.
